Five Apps Battle Through Six Rounds, With No Participation Trophies

A while back, short-drama apps stopped being a niche curiosity. Per Sensor Tower, the category earned about $700M in global in-app revenue in Q1 2025, and 49% of it came from the US. Roughly $2.8–3B was the watch The Lost Queen figure for full-year 2025, and the quarterly figure had grown to about $750M by Q1 2026. Anyone who has searched a store for a short reels app has run into at least one of the five names that drive the conversation: ReelShort, DramaBox, ShortMax, My Drama and DramaWave. On the surface they appear identical, with vertical episodes, a cliffhanger every minute or two and a weekly pass waiting behind the paywall. What you pay and where you can watch hinge on how they differ underneath, in ownership, pricing, platforms and extras. We put them through six rounds and named a winner in each, using only store listings, company terms and published industry data as of September 2026.

The Master Comparison Table

Ahead of the rounds, take a look at the full field on a single screen. All prices reflect the US App Store as of September 2026, and they change by country, platform and promotion. For market share, the figures are Media Partners Asia estimates for the microdrama market outside China. Each app’s Google Play listing is the source of the install counts. A cell reading “not reported” means no reliable source released the figure; we would rather leave a gap than guess. Use the grid as your scoreboard and read the rounds below as the commentary.

Round 1: Ownership and Scale

ReelShort is the incumbent, and it still carries the most weight. MPA assigns it about 29% of the market outside China; launched in August 2022, it comes from Crazy Maple Studio, based in Sunnyvale and backed by China’s COL Group. MPA also puts its revenue for 2025 at $785M and projects $1.05B for 2026. Launched in April 2023 and holding about 21%, DramaBox is run by Singapore’s StoryMatrix as a subsidiary of Beijing Dianzhong Technology. In Q1 2025, ReelShort was ahead $130M to $120M according to Sensor Tower, but by Q1 2026 the two were level at roughly $140M each, with DramaBox ranked first. Often mistyped as “dreamwave”, DramaWave is the youngest app here, yet it already has about 13%, and its annualized revenue reportedly topped $700M by Q2 2026. ShortMax, which operates from Hong Kong, appears to be the same app as ShortTV from Jiuzhou Culture. My Drama, the smallest of the group with 5M+ Android installs, is still the only one with Fox Entertainment as a shareholder. For context, GoodShort, which sits just outside this field, holds about 6%. Winner: ReelShort, narrowly, on market share.

Round 2: Cost

This is the round where the apps seem most alike. A weekly pass at about $19.99 is sold by ReelShort, ShortMax, My Drama and DramaWave in the US App Store, and each one renews automatically. ShortMax also lists a $9.99 “Weekly Pass Pro”, while DramaWave’s weekly VIP starts at $7.99. Going a different route, DramaBox offers auto-renewing memberships at $5.99, $17.99 and $19.99 plus special offers from $4.99. The only verified monthly plan in these US listings, DramaWave’s monthly VIP at $36.99, is the standout. Because four weeks of a $19.99 weekly pass add up to about $80, a monthly plan at less than half that is the smarter buy for steady viewers. Winner: DramaWave, because its monthly plan undercuts four weekly renewals by a wide margin. Prices differ by country, platform and promotion, so the number on your screen may be different.

Round 3: Watching for Free

On free viewing, the marketing grows loud and the details grow thin. One rewarded ad unlocks two premium episodes, and the first 5 to 15 episodes of a series are usually free, according to ReelShort’s own blog. A seven-day check-in streak yields 100+ coins, but free reward coins usually expire, while paid coins do not. ReelShort also operates official channels on YouTube, TikTok and Dailymotion, which offer the easiest legitimate way to sample a reel short drama without paying. Look-alike sites, modded APKs and “unlimited coins” generators are unofficial and never a safe shortcut, so steer clear of them. DramaBox has free options too, but its exact numbers for free episodes, ad caps and check-in coins show up only in third-party guides. Winner: ReelShort, with a clear lead.

Round 4: Screens and Platforms

These apps truly split apart on the question of screens. Beyond iPhone, iPad, Apple silicon Macs, Vision Pro and Android, ReelShort also streams in a browser at reelshort.com, with progress that syncs across devices. DramaWave’s verified presence is its iOS and Android apps, and DramaBox’s website mostly sends you back to the app. ShortMax offers web browsing too, since its domain redirects to the ShortTV website. My Drama plays the trump card: an Apple TV app for tvOS 18 or later, something ReelShort’s App Store listing does not show. Any of the five will do if a shorts app on your phone is all you need. Winner: ReelShort overall, but My Drama claims the living room.

Round 5: Libraries and Original Series

ShortMax is untouchable on raw numbers. The app claims 50,000+ dramas in 19 languages, and as of January 2024 the company behind ShortTV had made more than 600 mini-dramas for overseas markets, most of them dubbed Chinese adaptations. More than 80% of the newly released content on DramaWave is AI-generated, reports say, and the app claims 30,000+ dramas in 18 languages. The Double Life of My Billionaire Husband and Fated to My Forbidden Alpha, help ReelShort win on recognizable hits, and both of them went viral in November 2023. DramaBox answers with an LA production team and originals such as Fake Dating My Rich Nemesis. My Drama has the most interesting pipeline, because Fox has committed to 200+ vertical titles over two years. Winner: ShortMax, on sheer volume.

Round 6: Bonus Features and Fine Print

This round belongs to DramaWave by a distance. Offline downloads, on-screen comments and 1080p video all appear in its App Store listing, and no other app in this comparison is verified to offer offline viewing. ReelShort’s cross-device sync comes in as the next most useful perk for viewers who switch between phone and laptop. The fine print merits a look too, as it varies more than the prices do. Cancel in App Store or Google Play settings, because on any of these apps deleting the app does not cancel your subscription. My Drama forfeits coins after 12 months of inactivity, and ShortMax’s terms state refunds are not given “unless the paid product/service is unusable”. Winner: DramaWave, comfortably.

Best For: The Final Picks

Since no single short drama app wins every round, the right choice comes down to how you watch. My Drama is best for Apple TV, as it is the one app here with a verified tvOS version and the only one with Fox-produced originals. ReelShort is best for web viewing, thanks to a full browser player and progress that travels with you between devices. DramaWave is best for commuters and steady bingers, as it combines offline downloads with a $36.99 monthly plan. ShortMax is best for pure volume, as its claimed 50,000+ dramas overshadow everything else in the grid. Best for backing the current revenue leader is DramaBox, ranked first by Sensor Tower in Q1 2026 and picked for Disney’s 2025 Accelerator class. When it comes to free, legitimate sampling, ReelShort wins again, with its ad unlocks, check-in coins and official social channels. Pick one, cancel the weekly pass you are not using and let the cliffhangers wait a day if all five tempt you.
